Challenge
A 42” reinforced concrete storm culvert beneath a highly traveled roadway had joints that were separated and offset resulting in erosion of the surrounding soil. One joint was so severely separated that sunlight was entering the culvert. The concern was that sinkholes would likely develop and the above road was threatened if the erosion continued.

Engineered Solution
To prevent sinkholes and groundwater infiltration into the pipe joints a cost-effective solution was required. The DOT needed a way to stop this infiltration while not interrupting traffic. The DOT reached out to HydraTech and specified the HydraTite Seals.
Scope
Four Extra-Wide and Six Double-Wide HydraTite Internal Pipe Joint Seals were the chosen solution. The Double-Wide seals’ larger width would accommodate the joints with more severe separation and offset.

Solution
HydraTite seals provide a trenchless repair at a fraction of the cost of excavation or fully lining the pipeline. As in many cases, the pipe was good, but the joints were bad. The sealed joints eliminated erosion and protected the above road. The job was done quickly and without disruption to traffic.
